August, for me, is writing month. I don’t have to teach anymore and the flood of essays does not arrive before September. Except for the librarians and cafeteria staff there is almost nobody on campus. The offices adjacent to mine are vacated – which means I can take my shoes off, blast the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and mutter to myself while writing.
Writing month, however, comes with writing goals. And arbitrary ones at that. So today, on this fine Sunday morning, I remind myself that editing is part of the writing process and therefore counts towards writing goals. At this stage I rather have ten edited pages than twenty new pages of wild thoughts and unharnessed words.
So be gentle and remember that the number of pages is exactly that – just a number with no indication to the quality of your writing.
